Good news, Friends of Maylands Samphires have been successful in getting a SALP grant again for 2019, and Apace Nursery in North Fremantle is growing some more samphires (Tecticornia spp.) and the saltbush (Suaeda australis) for the site at Clarkson Reserve. Friends of Maylands Samphires have helped to propagate cuttings from material collected on site and plan to collect seed when it becomes available.
FOMS are calling for helpers again for planting during June-July this year.
A good number of 2018 plants are thriving and some of these samphires are now in flower. Soon we'll be getting another patch ready, using black plastic to cover the ground to kill the couch grass. You will see this patch on the edge of the saltmarsh when you're visiting the area.
On Tuesday mornings a small team is helping the natural regeneration process by weeding around new plants emerging near the fence line.
Please contact the samphire project if you're able to join us.
