More and more people are understanding the importance of tree canopy in urban areas for providing habitat and ensuring our cities are more liveable for people too.

I don't have a street tree and I would like one...

Why get a street tree?

• Cleans our air and absorbs pollutants
• Reduces heat, glare and flooding
• Improves mental health and wellbeing

Send an email to ask your council to plant a tree on your verge. If you live in the City of Bayswater you can use this form to Request a Tree.

I have a tree. I want to know what type it is!

Some councils publish their street-tree data online — look up your species via Intramaps:

• City of South Perth: open Intramaps and select 'Trees' in the left menu to find your tree's exact species.
• Town of Bassendean: open Intramaps to see where 'Street Trees' are and which are on the Significant Tree Register.
• City of Stirling: open Intramaps and click 'Trees and Vegetation' for details including its pruning schedule.

Other local government areas don't publish this yet — why not email your council to ask if street-tree information can be made public?

Prefer to identify it yourself? Use an app like iNaturalist or PictureThis, or ask the excellent Western Australian Eucalypts Facebook group to help identify your gum tree.

Get to know your tree using these resources:

• Carbon: find out how much carbon dioxide your tree sequesters at MyTree (you'll need the trunk diameter and species).
• Biodiversity: see what wildlife it attracts, when it flowers and more via this NatureLink Perth resource.
• First Nations knowledge: Perth NRM's Traditional Ecological Knowledge document outlines Noongar uses of native species.
• Plant database: Gardening with Angus has detailed info on your tree or shrub.
