Our Management Committee

Environment House is an incorporated not-for-profit association, run by a volunteer Management Committee elected by our members at each Annual General Meeting.

The Committee is responsible for the good governance of Environment House — guiding our direction, overseeing our finances and projects, and making sure the organisation stays true to its purpose: promoting sustainable living, protecting and restoring the natural environment, and providing a centre for community engagement and education.

Our Committee members aren't just decision-makers — they are all hands-on volunteers in the organisation. Between them they contribute many hours and a wide range of skills each year, from finance, administration and IT to environmental expertise, community engagement and support for our EcoShop and projects. We're proud of the constructive and positive way we work together to get things done.

What the Committee does

The Management Committee meets regularly throughout the year to:

• Set the direction of Environment House and oversee its projects, campaigns and partnerships
• Manage the organisation's finances, including an independent annual audit that supports good governance and community confidence
• Support our staff, volunteers and sub-committees (such as the EcoShop team)
• Maintain our relationships with funding partners, local government and community groups
• Ensure Environment House meets its obligations as an incorporated association

Committee roles

Convenor

The Convenor leads the Committee — chairing committee meetings and general meetings, planning the business of each meeting with the Secretary, and providing guidance to the Committee and staff to keep our governance on track.

Deputy Convenor

The Deputy Convenor supports the Convenor and steps into the role when needed.

Secretary

The Secretary keeps the organisation running smoothly behind the scenes — handling correspondence, preparing meeting notices and agendas, keeping accurate minutes, and maintaining our membership register and official records.

Treasurer

The Treasurer looks after the organisation's finances — making sure money coming in and going out is properly recorded, payments are made on time, financial records are kept safely, and financial statements are prepared for the Annual General Meeting and the annual audit.

Ordinary members

Ordinary committee members bring their individual skills and perspectives to the Committee and take an active role in the life of Environment House — whether that's supporting the EcoShop, contributing environmental expertise, helping with HR, communications or IT, or simply bringing valuable community knowledge to the table.

Working alongside the Committee

Coordinator

The Coordinator is a paid staff position rather than a member of the Committee. The Coordinator attends committee meetings and provides a monthly report, and connects Environment House with the wider community — overseeing funding and projects, building collaborative relationships, and identifying opportunities to develop local responses that improve environmental sustainability.

Environment House also employs a Bookkeeper and a Garden Coordinator, each working a small number of hours per week to support the organisation's finances and gardens.

Join us

Committee members are elected each year at our Annual General Meeting, and any member of Environment House aged 18 or over can nominate. If you'd like to contribute your skills to the future of Environment House, we'd love to hear from you.
